Thinking of creating a Ranger for my next character...
I'd like to try a trapper, but I don't know too terribly much about the correct type of skills.
Also, which would be better to start my Ranger? NF or Proph?

Do not make a trapper. They aren't good for anything... Except some farming, laying traps and luring mobs into them in regular PvE play (not very effective IMHO) and Z-Elite.

Trapper is mainly only effective in Zaishen Elite. Make your Ranger in Nightfall.

Rangers are very verstaile. Trapper is good for farming , for normal play , Barrage and BHA are good. Most stances offer good survivability and rangers have a godly skill [Distracting Shot] , it should never leave your bar

who ses limit yourself to one object ? as long as your armor is runed you could do a variety of things , such as trapping , interupting , barrage , degen build , runner , as said above rangers are very versitile , which gives you a chance to try out alot of stuff .

In my experience playing a ranger, degen is just as ineffective as it is for an Illusions Mesmer and trapping doesn't do as much damage as you might like. Your best bet is Conjure/[Splinter Weapon] + [Barrage], which requires that your team actually know what they're doing in aggroing a group.
That's pretty much why I don't play a ranger anymore.

You didn't say whether you're interested in PvP or PvE. For PvE:
1. Trapper - you need traps of course. Most traps use Wilderness Survival, so you'd want to jack points into that. You'd want to get as much energy as you can. You want some skills to help with energy management and to speed up the trapping process.
2. Interrupter - [[Broad Head Arrow] and [[Distracting Shot] are must-haves, but others will do until you get them. You can experiment with using things like [[Choking Gas] and [[Incendiary Arrows].
3. Barrage - Usually involves a pet. Main skills would be [[Barrage] or [[Volley] and perhaps some form of IAS (Increased Attack Speed) - [[Tiger's fury] or [[Never Rampage Alone], etc. You may want to jack a lot of points into Expertise, especially if you use NRA.

Overall, I'd say Nightfall for the Heroes, but Prophecies has a nice slow learning curve.

For pve trapping isn't recommended. By the time all your traps are set the enemies will be killed. :x
Also, you'll be moving fairly quickly so a form of [[barrage] or [[volley] is better.
As far as pvp goes interrupts are the best hands down.

Trapping is actually pretty fun for general PvE. It's not the most effective, but certainly a nice change of pace.

Sorry about that. I prefer PvE, so my Ranger will be PvE too.
I can't decide which would be better for PvE, Trapping, Pets, or Interrupts...

for pve go interupts . as for which campaign to start on i'd say no to proph as you have to do quite abit , or get several runs to get the attribute points . NF perhaps , has the nice heroes to begin with , quite nice for getting leg survivor and the ranger armors are quite easily the best . or if you want quick leveling , feel confident andwant to get started quickly go for factions . really your choice though

Better in what sense? More fun? More effective? Faster?
And, are you usually with human Guildmates, PUGs, or do you use heroes & henchies mostly.
With Guildmates, it would depend upon what builds/classes they are using.
For PUGs, interrupt/BHA is more versatile.
For H&H there are many possibilities. I use a sort of Barrage/pet group myself. I run a more or less standard Barrage build, Jin is a dust ranger (using an ebon bow and [[Ebon Dust Aura]), Margrid is an interrupter using [[broad head arrow], and Livia is a minion master (her build varies depending upon available corpses etc.). Add 2 henchie monks and 2 other henchies .

[Troll Unguent] sucks IMO, use monks.
Whirling Defence is a GREAT Self-Defence.
Since you are aleady using [Epidemic] to spread conditions, you might aswell add some more, [Apply Poison] is a personal favourite. If there are alot of melee mobs who tend to attack the backline, including you, add in [throw dirt] for mass blind.
I don't like Finish Him, because unless you're targeting a boss, the target will be dead in a matter of seconds, doesn't matter if you use it or not.
I like to go with ["You Move Like A Dwarf"], because if you are in a Ele-heavy team and the monsters flee from AoE, or your warriors/minions need to chase them for whatever reason, knockdown+cripple helps a ton. It also synergizes well with the slow BHA.
Edit: In PuGs i always bring a ress, if i'm /Rt or in a strong team, i take Sunspear Rebirth Signet (Full HP+Energy), or if i'm doing a hard mission with a bunch of total strangers, who might be utter idiots, I'll go /Mo with Rebirth. Judge's Insight + Barrage for undeads, or generic BHA.
